From fragmented data to actionable insights, this is the lab of the future

For years, laboratories have been a stable cornerstone of the healthcare system, supported by systems that have earned their place. At the same time, there’s growing conviction that modern technology creates new opportunities - to respond faster, work more flexibly, and further centre the care process around the patient. “With Nexuzhealth Lab, we’re fully embracing that future vision,” says Pieter De Smet, Business Line Director Lab at Nexuzhealth. “We’re building a scalable and patient-centric alternative that connects lab data to the broader care journey.”

“The demand to develop our own LIS came directly from the field,” Pieter De Smet explains. “Customers using Nexuzhealth’s centralized electronic health record (EHR) increasingly ran into the limitations of existing systems. Lab data represents one of the largest data streams in a hospital. Labs perform thousands of tests every day, with each test generating multiple data points. Often, this is the first input for diagnostics and further treatment. It’s a missed opportunity when that data remains locked in isolated silos. Given our experience as an EHR market leader, we saw a clear opportunity to do better. Nexuzhealth Lab aims to bridge the gap between laboratory information and the rest of the healthcare chain. Our strength lies in combining a modern, scalabale and cloud-native platform with open integrations - and in working hand in hand with the healthcare sector.”

Putting the patient first

Roughly 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory results. A patient-first strategy is therefore essential. “Data should follow the patient - not the other way around. This gives care teams a complete overview, enabling them to respond more quickly. And patients have a clear understanding of their situation. It builds trust that the information is complete and coherent,” De Smet says. “Unfortunately, lab results still often travel separately from the rest of the medical data. This creates inefficiencies, duplicate testing, and sometimes even incorrect decisions.”

Co-creation

“We announced the development of Nexuzhealth Lab about a year ago. Today, the project is in full swing, and interest is growing - well beyond Belgium,” says De Smet. The development team is expanding rapidly, using a right-shoring model with teams in Belgium, Romania, and Greece. “This ensures we always have the right expertise, exactly when and where it's needed.”

Development happens in close collaboration with laboratories and medical professionals. “We start from real challenges and build solutions together. That spirit of co-creation is deeply embedded in Nexuzhealth’s DNA.”

Ready for the international market

One of the platform’s biggest assets? Openness. “From day one, Nexuzhealth Lab has been built with interoperability in mind. The software is designed around the FHIR standard and adheres to IHE profiles to enable seamless data exchange with other healthcare systems,” De Smet says. “This makes it easy for Nexuzhealth Lab to communicate with both Belgian and international EHRs and peripheral systems. It’s a conscious choice: we’re building an open, well-managed, and secure ecosystem.”

Future proof

According to De Smet, the COVID-19 pandemic clearly showed that traditional LIS systems hit their limits in times of crisis. “Labs had to scale up massively overnight, but often relied on on-premise infrastructure. Nexuzhealth Lab is built differently. It’s fully cloud-native, with no waiting times or hardware investments required. As demand grows, the system simply scales along with it. No bottlenecks, no hidden costs - what you need is available instantly.”

That scalability also paves the way for the future, where data-heavy applications like AI, image recognition, and genetics will play an increasingly central role. “We’re building today for what will be essential tomorrow. And we deliver the full ecosystem: software, infrastructure, security, compliance, support - everything a lab needs to focus on its core mission. All in a SaaS model with full peace of mind. From regulatory updates to cybersecurity, we handle it. Nexuzhealth evidently complies with NIS2 and all other relevant industry regulations, and we provide extensive support. For hospitals, security and compliance aren’t optional - they’re foundational.”

Pattern recognition and other insights

Insights derived from lab data are crucial,” De Smet adds. “By centralising all the data generated every day into one platform, you gain visibility into patterns and anomalies. This helps labs improve continuously. Take quality control, for example: many labs run standard checks on their equipment every day. With the right analysis, those trends can reveal overuse and guide more efficient operations. That’s not just good for productivity, it also reduces pressure on lab teams and cuts costs.”

“And with smart algorithms and AI, you can take this even further. That’s how we aim to support the transition toward preventive healthcare. We don’t just want to accelerate the work, we want to raise its quality. Decision support will become a natural part of the workflow.”
